Cape Embroiderers' Guild
Established in 1984
The Cape Embroiderers’ Guild was born in June 1984 as a result of a group of ladies attending some classes on Canvas Work, given by a visiting friend from overseas. The ladies became hooked and wanted to continue stitching. At the inaugural meeting 57 people joined the Guild and it was fascinating to discover just how many talented and passionate embroiderers there were in Cape Town who until that time did not know of each others existence.
The CEG is now approaching its 30th Birthday and the years between have seen it involved in organising wonderful exhibitions of members’ work and arranging visits from overseas tutors and experts to teach and lecture throughout South Africa. The CEG is fortunate to have amongst its members several embroiderers of international renown, some of whom have written books, taught in other countries and won international awards. These embroiderers teach and run workshops for the Guild and enthusiastically share their knowledge and love of embroidery, inspiring us to learn and explore new ideas.
Membership is open to anyone interested in any aspect of embroidery be it traditional or contemporary. Our aim is to encourage people to discover the wonders of stitching, of creating embroideries using needle and thread, by hand or with a machine. We encourage the learning of new techniques and hope to keep the skills and knowledge alive for future generations - this is our passion and our raison d’être.
